Udayan creates portraits

For Udayan P.S., a drummer in the professional circuit in Kochi for over two decades, art is for heart’s sake. And it’s not alone the drum sticks that he handles with dexterity. He is a drummer and an artist rolled into one.

Interestingly, unlike most other artists, he doesn’t use brush and colours for pouring out his creativity. Instead, he makes effective use of thread, needle and a motorised embroidery machine to carve out fine pieces of fine art in cloth.

The fact that he could breathe life into only twenty portraits, in a matter of seven years, ever since he took a plunge into this unique art form, speaks for the extensive period of time taken for completing each portrait. It takes at least three months for Udayan to complete a single portrait. He picked up the thread of inspiration years back after seeing a similar kind of work displayed at a museum in Guruvayoor.
